2005 ~ 13 December:
Bruno spends a day with Mr Rutter

Class 6 D, Miss Day's class, have a pet and he's called Bruno.
Each week he spends time with someone in the class.
Last week the class voted Miss Day should look after Bruno.
So, at the weekend she took him to meet the Queen....

Although rather a come down after that experience, on Tuesday he spent
the day  helping Mr Rutter.  During the day he kept a diary..

7.45 a.m.

8.30 a.m.
I’m staying in the office, just in case there are any important telephone calls for Mr Rutter.  Meanwhile Mr Rutter has gone to check all the staff are in and to do the early morning duty (rather him than me – bit cold and damp outside!)

9.00 a.m.
Ah, Mr Rutter’s returned.  He’s been taking pictures of the new Infant School play equipment – just updating the website I see: probably needs a hand, I’ll see if I can help.  He’s off in a few minutes to play for the Year 3 dress rehearsal. I think I’ll stay here; don’t want to get in the way of all that piano playing.

10.30 a.m.
Mr Rutter’s returned from an excellent Year 3 rehearsal.  He says he hopes he has some good photographs too.  Meanwhile I have been dealing with one or two anxious parents about the cloud from the fire at Hemel Hempstead .  I checked with the Director of Education, Youth and Leisure who’s given me some advice.  Better pass it on to Mr Rutter!

12.00 noon
What a busy morning, no wonder Mr Rutter looks tired some days.  Well, I was part of a meeting with Mrs Sumner and Mr Saunders and that was interesting.  Then Mrs  Glen, the Chair of Governors, called in for her weekly meeting.  After that Mr Rutter made a decision that we’re all staying in at playtime and lunchtime because of the smoke cloud.  We’re 13 miles away, and that should be safe, but Mr Rutter says for today it was better to stay in just to be on the safe side.

12.05 p.m.
Mr Rutter’s just back, he has just sprayed the hinges of the staff room with furniture polish.  Said he hadn’t gone ‘overboard’ with the cleaning, just that the door was squeaking terribly and as there appeared to be no oil, furniture polish would be the next best thing.  Funny the sort of things he gets up to.

12.20 p.m.
Well, we’ve just written a letter to a parent.  She was one of four who works for GlaxoSmithKline.  They asked the firm to help fund the Infant Playground equipment and as a result have just been notified that £2,000 is coming the schools’ (both schools) way.  Great news, so Mr Rutter wants to write and say thank you for the help and support.

1.05 p.m.
Lunchtime is over half way through, not easy with all the children in, but it is rather hazy and you can clearly see the cloud.  They’re all a bit noisy and Year 6 (where I usually stay) seem to be enjoying repeated trips to the toilets – not sure they need to go that number of times!

3.30 p.m.
The children are just leaving the site.  Hope they all get home safely, especially as it is getting dark so early.  This afternoon I was with Mr Rutter when the head of buildings visited.  She wanted to talk about the cracks around the school and the loose plaster in places.  The school, it would seem, has had a report done and now wants some money to replace large parts of the roof.  They also took a look at the places where the heating pipes have leaked – Mrs Ansell’s room and the Infant Staff Room – the Staff Room didn’t look at all nice – 6D are sooooo lucky with their room!  Now I’m sitting here wondering whether I shall go back with Miss Day, or stay with Mr Rutter.  It’s alright being here, I suppose, but I much prefer having all those children round me, so much more fun!
