Year 5's visit to the Gurdwara

On Thursday 9th December Year 5 visited
the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Southall.

This is a very new and splendid gurdwara built just seven years ago.

We got off the coach and, after crossing the road, entered the gurdwara.
The first thing we did was to remove our shoes.
Then we needed to cover our heads.
The girls had brought head scarves with them;
the boys were loaned a special covering or 'Rumāl'.

We needed to wash our hands and then went to a large room
for a talk about Sikhism.  Some of the information we knew,
since we had been learning about the Sikh religion at school.

Then we were taken to the central prayer hall.
At the far end was the throne on which was placed the Guru Granth Sahib.
After sitting peacefully for a while we were able to go close
to the Guru Granth Sahib, but needed to treat it with respect
as one would do royalty, kneeing before it or bowing the head,
before walking round it.

Finally, as it was lunch time, we visited the Langar where we had lunch.
Many of us were cautious, since some of the foods were new to us;
once we tried them, most of us wanted some more!
Then it was time to return to school after a fascinating trip
increasing our awareness of and respect for the customs of other people.
