Year 5 Visit Southall Gurdwara

On Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th November Year 5 visited
the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Southall, half on each day.

As we entered the gurdwara the first thing we did was to remove our shoes.
Then we needed to cover our heads.
The girls had brought head scarves with them;
the boys were loaned a special covering or 'Rumāl'.

Our heads covered, we could enter the gurdwara.
First there was a short talk about the building and about the sikh religion.

We saw a wonderful stain glass window
and posed in front of it for a group photograph.

Then we were taken to the central prayer hall.
At the far end was the throne on which was placed
the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh sacred book.

As it was lunch time we visited the Langar where we had lunch.
Many of us were cautious, since some of the foods were new to us;
once we tried them, most of us wanted some more!

It was a fascinating trip
increasing our awareness of and respect for the customs of other people.
