Year 4 visit Roman Verulamium - 4H's Day

Wednesday 10th November and Year 4 set off for the St. Albans,
and the ancient Roman city of Verulamium.

Much of the city had been destroyed long ago,
with many of the stones and bricks reused for later buildings.

First stop - A look at the Roman wall that surrounded the city.

We could see the tower of St Alban's Abbey in the distance;
it was built with bricks collected from the ruins of the roman city.

Then we visited the hypocaust - a roman central heating system -
before heading off for the remains of the ancient outdoor theatre.

We were very pleased the weather was fine!

Then we headed for the museum.
How long did it take to lay a floor like that by hand?!

Finally we tried our hand at building arches;
we think we would have made good roman engineers!
