Over the past
fifteen years there has been a huge expansion in the number of staff
working in schools. At Breakspear Junior School we have gone from
around 25 in the early 1990s to 49 at the present time. Frequently
for staff meetings we are more than 25 and can no longer fit in the
existing staff room. Several years ago the governors considered
how the school could satisfactorily accommodate all its staff.
Various options were considered - including building on the roof!
In the end, a joint project with the Infant School of building on
largely unused land in the quadrangle was considered. Yes, there
would be losses, in particularly of natural light in one of the
corridors (but that was already largely the case for the entrance lobby,
so not a new experience), but the significant gains in space would
certainly compensate. So plans went ahead during 2007 with a
successful tender being accepted in January 2008. There were some
last minute complications with getting the project formally agreed in
the Civic Centre |

this was two weeks after Easter). Out come the windows... |
