The Breakspear Archives

9-11 May 2011 ~
5W and 5C's Residential Trip to Derbyshire - 3

After lunch back at the Youth Hostel we set off for a return visit to Matlock Bath.
This time we visited the Temple Mine including panning for gold.

Finally there was a visit to the Mining Museum.
Here, among other things, we were able to experience
what it was like crawling through mine shafts.

Back at the Youth Hostel we all enjoyed our evening meal.

The next day was our last.
After breakfast we packed and set off for Castleton.

First stop, a quick look up at Mam Tor before a visit to Treak Cliff Cavern.

More up hill walking!

Treak Cliff Cavern is the home of Blue John (a blue and yellow fluorspar) ...

... and of wonderful stalagmites, and stalactites.
A real Aladdin's Cave.

Finally, after lunch at Treak Cliff
(and an opportunity to buy some wonderful minerals)
we set off across country for Castleton,
the car park and the journey home.

It had been a great three days, thank you Breakspear!
